According to the prophetic words of St. John, the Baptizer
of the Lord, "He it is, Whose coming after me is preferred before me, Whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose."
(St. John 1:27)
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church through
nearly all of her history has promoted the Monastic Life. Today, Ethiopia still has more Monastic Houses (Monasteries &
Convents), than any other national Church in the world. However, here in the Diaspora there is yet no place for those who
wish to test a Monastic vocation among those who have already committed to live the Gospel by common life.
The objective of Nine Saints Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Monastery is to fully focus
our lives on the Incarnate Word of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, and, on His teachings, as revealed through the Holy Gospels
and teachings of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
Presently,
we are a small group of Monks living here, in the United States of America. Currently, we live as much as thousands
of miles from each other, and therefore, are seeking a place where we may meet to share God's love with all who will receive
it.
Our unity in personal prayers has inspired us to begin
by providing a meeting-place to grow a culture of repentance. Therefore, we made this beachhead in cyberspace: to share the
blessings that we receive with others. We continually pray that our efforts on the Web will assist us all in nurturing the
faith that has lovingly been planted in us by our forefathers.
Also,
our mission from Almighty God is to accept the challenge of the recent immigration of Ethiopians as a sign about which, Our
Lord Jesus Christ prophesied would be fulfilled in these days.
As
we look toward the future, we pray that others will share the blessings that started in 1995 with initial plans of one sincerely
committed lay-woman of the Ethiopian Church. We are currently considering the feasibility of the following objectives in an
initial facility, here, within the United States of America:
A. The donations toward, or purchase of suitable property; this property would be
within a couple of hours drive from an urban area that currently has a significant Ethiopian population. We feel this is necessary
to provide needed quiet at moderate real estate prices, and, so that the Monastery could, also, be developed into a Spiritual
Retreat Center for all members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
B. Once, having secured suitable property, we would begin by building a Monastic
Church, wherein the complete cycle of Liturgical services by, and for the Monastic brotherhood would be performed. But, of
course, this edifice would also welcome visiting worshipers, thus balancing traditional Christian hospitality with integrity
of Monastic brotherhood.
C.
That the Monastery Complex would provide residence for Monks
Monastic formation / vocational testing
Regular active professed members of Brotherhood
Senior (limited duty) Monks
Rest
and recuperation facilities for missionary Monks
D. Religious Education center for all levels of church service
1. Classrooms
Multimedia production facility, generating titles in these disciplines
Liturgical service
Liturgical and spiritual music and poetry
Sermons
Lectures
Iconography
E.
Retreat and conference center for spiritual renewal
1. Guest rooms
2. Multipurpose hall
a. stage
b. kitchen
F.
Library, Museum, Gift shop
These facilities would further enhance the evangelical ministry of this Monastic Brotherhood, as a spiritual education venue,
and to sell inspirational handicrafts produced by members of the Community, both Monastic and Faithful.
